Key Numbers
Original Medicare, Supplement, or Advantage?
Medicare has four parts — A, B, C, and D — plus supplement plans layered on top. Most retirees are overwhelmed by the choices. Janine has been navigating Michigan's Medicare market for over 20 years and works as an independent broker, meaning she is not tied to any single carrier and can genuinely find what's right for you.
Using a broker costs you nothing
Plans are the same price whether you enroll directly or through Janine. Brokers are compensated by the insurance carriers. You get expert guidance at no cost to you.
Oct 15 – Dec 7
Every year you have the opportunity to review and switch your Medicare plan. Many people stay in the wrong plan for years because no one told them they could change. Janine reviews your plan every year automatically.
Original Medicare + Supplement
Parts A and B cover hospital and medical. A Medigap supplement pays most or all of what Original Medicare doesn't. Any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare nationwide. Predictable costs. Best for frequent medical needs or travel.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Private insurance that replaces Original Medicare. Often includes dental, vision, hearing, and drug coverage. Network-based — you must use in-network providers. Lower monthly premium but higher potential out-of-pocket costs. Best for relatively healthy enrollees who stay local.
Prescription Drug Coverage
Stand-alone drug plan if you have Original Medicare + Supplement. Always enroll when first eligible — even if you take no prescriptions — to avoid the lifetime late penalty.
5 Medicare Mistakes That Cost Michigan Retirees Thousands
Missing the Part B enrollment window
If you don't enroll in Part B when first eligible and you're not covered by employer insurance, you'll pay a permanent 10% penalty for every 12-month period you delayed — for the rest of your life. On a $185/month premium, a 2-year delay costs an extra $370/month forever.
Enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan without checking your doctors
Advantage plans have networks. Your specialist, your hospital, your oncologist — may not be covered. Many retirees discover this only after a serious diagnosis. Janine verifies your providers before recommending any plan.
Skipping Part D because "I don't take prescriptions"
The late penalty for Part D is 1% of the national average premium for every month without creditable coverage past your initial enrollment period. It accumulates — and it's permanent. Enroll in a low-cost plan even if you need nothing today.
Not reviewing your plan every year during AEP
Plans change. Premiums change. Your prescriptions change. A plan that was perfect two years ago may now have your medication at a higher tier or dropped a provider from the network. Annual reviews are free. Ignoring them costs you.
Not accounting for IRMAA
If your income exceeds $103,000 (individual) or $206,000 (married, filing jointly), you pay a higher Part B and Part D premium. This Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount surprises many retirees with investment income. Janine coordinates Medicare planning with your income picture.
