1What Happened
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services confirmed the 2026 Medicare Part B standard monthly premium has increased. The annual Part B deductible has also risen. These changes take effect January 1, 2026, and are automatically deducted from Social Security benefit payments for most enrollees. The official announcement was published on the CMS newsroom at cms.gov.
2The Detroit Angle
For Metro Detroit retirees — many of whom built careers in the automotive industry or the public sector — a premium increase directly reduces the Social Security check that arrives each month. Unlike national averages, Southeast Michigan retirees often face higher healthcare utilization rates and prescription costs, meaning Part B coverage isn't optional. Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb county seniors on fixed incomes feel every dollar of this change.
3Janine's Take
Every year I remind my clients: your Medicare premium is a retirement budget line item, not an afterthought. When it rises, your other spending categories have to absorb it — or your plan has to adapt.
