Metro Detroit Alert — Michigan Medicaid Is Changing

Published June 8, 2026 · Lifestyle Safety LLC · Metro Detroit

    1What Happened

This one hits close to home. New federal Medicaid work requirements and eligibility verification rules are now moving into implementation — and Michigan is one of the states facing the most significant impact.

According to Bridge Michigan (June 5, 2026), Michiganders will soon face new paperwork requirements to prove and maintain Medicaid eligibility, work requirements for those enrolled in expanded Medicaid, and more frequent eligibility checks throughout the year.

A separate Michigan Public analysis projects that between 171,000 and 355,000 Michiganders could lose Medicaid coverage by 2028 as a result of these changes.

At the federal level, the Trump administration also enacted the first-ever national Medicaid work requirements this week, with CNN reporting that millions of sick Americans — including cancer patients — could face new barriers to maintaining or obtaining coverage.

    2The Detroit Angle

Many Metro Detroit families have incorporated Medicaid into their long-term care funding strategy — whether as a primary plan or a fallback. These changes make it essential to revisit that assumption now.

    3Janine's Take

Long-term care insurance, hybrid life/LTC products, and asset protection strategies may need to play a larger role in your plan than previously anticipated. Do not wait until coverage is disrupted to build an alternative. Revisit any plan that relied on Michigan Medicaid as a backstop.
